THE Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD) has announced programmes for its fourth convocation ceremonies, highlighting its achievements in the past six years of its existence.
Addressing a press conference at the Owolabi Hall of the university, the vice chancellor, Professor Michael Ajisafe, said “Six years down the line, we can boldly and happily say that we have come of age… We have clearly overshot our expectations.”
Listing the university’s achievements, Professor Ajisafe said of ABUAD: “The first university to take off at its permanent site; the first university to secure full accreditation for Medicine within five years; the first university to secure full accreditation in Nursing within five years; the first university to secure 100 per cent success in its Nursing examination.”
He added that ABUAD is “the first university in West Africa to run Mechatronics as a degree course” and that the university had “received 100 per cent accreditation in all its 37 academic programmes.”
The vice chancellor noted that ABUAD came about as a result of the vision of its founder, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), after a seven-year experience as a pro-chancellor and chairman of council of the University of Lagos, to “entrench functional and quality education in this clime by providing and leading others in quality education, service, industry and character as well as discipline.”
Six years down the line, Ajisafe said that ABUAD had been declared “a benchmark” by the National Universities Commission, and that the “Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) described ABUAD’s Engineering programme as ‘the template for Engineering education in Nigeria” and “it’s Law programme as ‘the best in West Africa’.”
ABUAD will be graduating 912 students, 61 of who made First Class in Engineering, Social and Management Sciences; Medicine and Health Sciences; Engineering and Law.
