Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, says a thorough investigation is to be carried out to ascertain the immediate and remote cause of the fatal motor accident that occurred at the Waterside Bridge, Ogbor Hill, Aba, yesterday.
The Governor stated this after visiting several hospitals in Aba, where victims of the accident were receiving treatment.
He thanked God that those affected were doing well and expressed the hope that they would be discharged soon.
“What happened is quite unfortunate; necessary investigations will be carried out, and we want to find out both the immediate and remote cause of the accident”, he said.
The Governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, said measures would be put in place to forestall future occurrences, including restricting the movement of heavy-duty trucks to ply only at night, stating, “The measures are to stop heavy-duty vehicles from plying during the day but at night.”
The governor, who described the accident as unfortunate and shocking as the sanctity of life is important to him, said that the life of every Abian matters to him. He assured the victims that the government would take care of their medical bills as well as ensure they got the best medical care.
“Others that have injuries or that require surgery would be taken care of. So far, it’s about 11 of them. This is a very caring government.
These are some of the emergencies that they were never prepared for. So it would not be appropriate to allow them to go through this pain and the pain of looking for money to pay hospital bills.
So, being a very caring government, this government will take care of the medical bills, and we have communicated that to all the hospitals and chief medical directors where we visited”, he assured.
He promised that efforts are being made to put deplorable roads in the city in good shape.
Responding, the medical directors of some of the hospitals, including Prof. John Chikezie of ABSUTH, Dr Patrick Okolo of New Era Hospital, and Dr Emenike Chidi of Impact Hospital, appreciated the Abia State Government for coming to the rescue of the accident victims and assured that they were doing all they could to ensure the quick recovery of the patients.
They described the condition of the victims as stable and expressed the hope that they would fully recover and be discharged.
The hospitals visited include New Era Hospital, Impact Hospital, NISSI Hospital, Blessed Haven Hospital, GMP, Seventh Day Adventist Hospital, and ABSUTH, while the details of the 11 accident victims were documented for proper follow-up by the government.
