The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has joined millions around the world in mourning the death of His Holiness, Pope Francis, who passed away earlier today at the age of 88.
In a statement signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the Christian body described the late pontiff as “a towering figure of faith” whose influence transcended denominational boundaries and touched countless lives across Nigeria and beyond.
On behalf of the national leadership of CAN and the broader Christian community in Nigeria, Archbishop Okoh extended deep condolences to the Catholic Church, praising Pope Francis’ papacy for its emphasis on mercy, justice, and compassion.
The statement said that the late Pope’s legacy left an indelible mark on Nigeria, citing his appointment of Nigerian bishops and cardinals as affirmations of the country’s vibrant faith.
Pope Francis, known globally for his humility and advocacy for the marginalized, was also praised for his role in advancing interfaith dialogue, a critical need in Nigeria’s multi-religious society.
CAN credited his efforts with nurturing unity amid the nation’s many socio-political and religious challenges.
“Though he never visited Nigeria, his pastoral journeys across Africa conveyed powerful messages of solidarity,” CAN noted.
CAN added that his encyclicals Laudato Si’ and Amoris Laetitia had a meaningful impact on Nigerian Christians by addressing themes like environmental stewardship and the sanctity of family life.
