In its bid to address consumer extortion, disputes and other sharp practices, the Ogun State House of Assembly has passed the Consumer Protection Bill, 2024.
The passage of the bill that will give room for establishment of the state Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) will provide for the interest of consumers, settlement of consumer disputes and for connected purposes.
This followed the presentation of the report of the Committee on Industry, Trade and Investments by the sponsor, Hon. Lukman Adeleye at a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide at the Assembly’s complex in Abeokuta.
Adeleye thereafter moved the motion for the adoption of the report, seconded by Hon. Babatunde Tella and supported by other lawmakers through a voice vote.
The bill was later read and adopted clause-by-clause before the Committee of the Whole House, after which the motion for its third reading was moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by Dickson Awolaja, while the Clerk of the House and Head of Legislative Services, Mr. Sakiru Adebakin, took the third reading of the bill before the lawmakers.
Responding, Hon. Elemide directed that the clean copy of the bill be transmitted to the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for assent.
