No one, especially children and young people, likes challenges or things that would stress them. However, stress is part of life and we face all kinds of challenges every day. ELIZABETH INNOCENT enquired from some Ibadan young people how they handle stress and challenges. Their views:

When faced with stress, I do many stuff. But, most times, I watch movies. In challenging situations, I feel sad and cry. Also, sometimes, I do things that help me take a deep breath. When I feel stressed, my breathing becomes shallow. I exercise, which reduces stress and anxiety, and makes me feel better. I connect with other people. Talking to a trusted friend or family member can help you feel heard, validated, and supported. I make time for activities that bring me joy and relaxation, such as reading, listening to music, or taking a relaxed bath. Sometimes, taking breaks allows me time to rest and recharge, especially when faced with a difficult task or situation.

I breathe and pause to assess the situation, identify its root cause, and break it down into manageable tasks. I prioritise self-care, including sleep, exercise, and nutrition. I seek support from trusted friends, family, or professionals. I practice mindfulness and focus on the present. I see challenges as opportunities for growth and reflection, and learn from experiences to improve. I take breaks and engage in relaxing activities. I set boundaries and learn to say ‘No’.

Whenever the situations around me are challenging, I calm down and accept that it is my life. Sometimes, I use Bible verses as an encouragement to help me calm down. I know that, in life, everything around me can’t be smooth. So, whenever I’m stressed, I relieve myself by doing things that give me strength. Sometimes, I listen to music to suppress my stress. I wrote a book titled ‘Quote of My Life’. I use the book as a motivation. I understand that challenges will come, and I know that everyone has his or her challenges. One does not have to be down because of the challenges around them. I believe that it’s the mindset that matters most. I keep myself with positive thoughts when I’m down, even when I know it’s hard for me, but these words give me the strength to believe that there is hope. I understand that it’s necessary for me to have challenges ─ it’s what makes me human. Christ even faced challenges when he was on Earth. So, I believe mine is normal. The stress around me proves that I’ve overworked myself and need rest. Challenges make one a warrior, not a coward.

In stressful and challenging situations, we need to acknowledge and accept our emotions. I recognise how I feel and permit myself to process those emotions. Sometimes, I practice self-care, like taking care of my physical, emotional, and mental well-being through sleep, regular exercise, and joyful activities. I surround myself with positive, supportive people who can offer emotional support and guidance. I view difficult situations as chances for growth and learning.

Handling stressful and challenging situations can be a little hard and needs more time and energy to control. Sometimes, I play with people around me. I watch movies most times to relax my head. If I know someone who knows the challenging situation I can ask for help, and they help me. Giving yourself positive energy is the best thing in life.

If I want to handle stress, I talk to my siblings or my mum. I watch movies too. I don’t like anything that gives me a headache because my parents do most things for me. Sometimes, I seek help from my friends when I’m stressed or when something is challenging for me. I do leave things that stress or challenge me when my efforts are not working. I avoid stress because I hate it.
