Wife of Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, Abigail, must have committed a quote by Abraham Lincoln to heart as she related her life journey when she made history as the first African woman to become a Mayor in the United Kingdom.
Recently, Dame Katung was inaugurated as the 130th Mayor of the City of Leeds, signaling a turning point in the United Kingdom’s long history and tradition.
The new mayoress is the first elected councillor from Africa to hold the Mayor position in Leeds and only the second black person after Eileen Taylor.
It was a moment of celebration in Kaduna South which her husband represents. A full delegation of the Kaduna State government was present at the inauguration to witness the proud moment.
Abigail Katung was born in Nigeria, she later moved to the United Kingdom for her education and studied at Leeds University and was active in leadership, mentorship and governance programmes.
