An Area Court sitting at Centre-Igboro in Ilorin, Kwara State has dissolved the two-year-old marriage between a couple, Latifat Yusuf and Saka Jimoh, over irreconcilable differences.
The presiding judge, Hammad Ajumobi, dissolved their marriage contracted under Islamic law, based on the insistence of the wife who was the petitioner.
Ajumobi, however, ordered the petitioner to observe three-month Iddah period, which involves a refrain from having any male relationship.
Considering the fact that there was no child from the failed marriage, the judge held that the petitioner must immediately inform the respondent in case she noticed any sign of pregnancy during the period.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the respondent earlier told the court that he was still in love with his wife, saying he had tried on many occasions to resolve their differences without any success.
Saka stated that their area Chief Imam and also the monarch of their community both visited the petitioner’s family for settlement.
“Her family bluntly refused to allow for settlement while all efforts to locate Latifat failed.”
He, however, told the court that though his wife was insisting on divorce, he was not willing to take back all he gave her in their marriage.
“I leave everything to the Almighty God,” he said.
