Wedding celebrations take many forms, depending on the world view, culture, religion, status, and finances of the celebrants. Depending on the above conditions, while some couples and their families opt for grand weddings, others go for simple ones. This inspired our question for today. Below are the responses of some of our contributors:

It depends on many factors. To be honest, as a proper Yoruba person, I love classy and elegant traditional weddings. When I was younger, I fantasised about doing a wedding that would be the talk of the town. But then, times have changed, and wisdom is profitable.

My folks know I love an elaborate wedding. And, to be frank, it is almost impossible for me to avoid it. I am the first child (and daughter) of my parents. I know it depends on what my husband also wants – but, for me, it is an elaborate wedding. This is why I am working hard for it.

I would go for a modest wedding. Even if I wanted to do otherwise, the current realities of the country frown on societal weddings. However, if we see someone who would bankroll our wedding, especially an elaborate one, why not?
Sewa Kaddy
I prefer a modest wedding to an elaborate one. It wastes resources, and I do not like crowds. On the other hand, with the kind of parent I have, my opinion would remain a dream. They would go more than elaborate.

I would prefer a modest wedding. I do not like noise. I do not like seeing a lot of people around me because I am a quiet and shy person. Fewer people mean less stress. An intimate wedding ceremony and reception would be less stressful. Secondly, one would have more time for one’s guests − close friends and families − and would also appreciate the feeling of having them around. Smaller venues have cosier, more welcoming feelings that large venues cannot offer. So, with the aforementioned points, I would prefer a modest wedding to an elaborate one.

I have spoken to my parents about this, and they both know by now that I am having a low-key wedding. Although my mum still talks about me having an extravagant wedding now and then, I have told her that it is my wedding and only my husband could say he wants something else. Interestingly, all the men I have dated are open to doing a low-key wedding.

It is an elaborate wedding for me. That is why I tell my man to hustle more every day. We have a wedding to plan. I know it makes me sound materialistic or something, but I do not care about what people think. I would have my wedding, and it would be beautiful.
Modupe Abayomi
I would prefer a modest wedding. I agree that weddings are worth all the celebration and excitement − at least, it is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration which needs to be celebrated richly. But, spending so much on a wedding is not necessary. A wedding is a day ceremony. The most important is the marriage − having a sweet home and enjoying the bliss of marriage. The money earmarked for an elaborate wedding could be used for something better for the newly-wedded couples.

I have not given it much thought. I believe that when it is time, my husband-to-be and I would discuss the pros and cons. But for now, I do not bother my head about it

I have never been a fan of elaborate weddings. The noise is a no-no for me. For me, it is just a simple traditional wedding and a court wedding.
Shalom Osaguona
I am not a fan of big weddings. I would prefer a modest one, with my family and friends by my side to witness a special day in my life.
Ayeade Emiyebi
I prefer a modest wedding because it is my big day, so I would love to make it memorable. I would love to attend to my guests in special ways by giving them good souvenirs and making them comfortable.
Osita Amaka Ruth
I would prefer a modest wedding. With the prices of everything going up, the best option is a modest wedding. I would choose an unpopular day and stream the wedding so that people who could not make it to the venue could watch it.
