Two days from today, Senator Bola Tinubu would have spent one month in office as the president of Nigeria. In the light of this, people are already assessing the performance of his administration. KINGSLEY ALUMONA sampled the opinions of some Nigerians on this matter. Their views:
Rowland Obed
It is a good start for President Tinubu within one month in office. Though the fuel subsidy removal has brought untold hardship, the benefits would come soon. The signing of the students’ loan bill into law would keep a lot of youths off the streets if properly implemented. The floating of the naira would enable market forces to determine forex, and that would strengthen the value of the naira in the long run. So far, so good, for appointments, though proper balancing is required.
Harun Usman
President Tinubu began on a sad note — the removal of fuel subsidy stole the expected sweetness of his government. He should have waited to till June. The announcement triggered hardship after surviving Buhari’s bad government. I want Obasanjo back. He is still the best president in Nigeria’s history.
Michael Opara
Apart from the way and manner he has gone about removing the subsidy — which is expected to happen at some point — what he has been doing is generally expected. Also, apart from the order of the arrest of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, he has not done anything unexpected. The president should be calculative in his decisions to avoid errors.
Afolabi Akinola
I think President Tinubu has started well. Although he removed the fuel subsidy, Nigerians still show understanding with him, believing that the benefits would come in the long run. Abolishing multiple foreign exchange rates is another achievement.
Adewale Adeniran
Excellent performance so far, with the removal of fuel subsidy, meeting with labour leaders, averting a nationwide strike, working towards a new minimum wage, working towards a single-exchange rate, and meeting with some leaders and heads of industries.
Abdullahi Musa
I am not a fan of the president, but the first step he has taken — removing the subsidy on fuel — shows he has the interest of the nation at heart. The country has been in very bad shape, and for us to restore the lost glory, we must face some hardship, including fuel subsidy removal. We all want a productive country, but that would come at some cost. I believe that is the direction of Mr President for the country – for us to be a producing nation. I believe he would be successful.
Jerry Ayelesan
President Bola Tinubu is a man of vision. His one month in office is better than the one year of the past government. I believe in him and in his administration of renewed hope. We have already seen that the president has plans for Nigerians.
Kuruye Tekena
Mr President has started on the right footing. However, I believe that the students’ loan scheme should be turned into ‘students’ meal tickets’. It should be subsidised and should cut across all levels of students. Students’ loans might be abused, but tickets are bought.
