APC campaign council shows Nigerians choice between continuity, new direction, says Kwankwaso
Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has criticised the newly constituted All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, describing it as evidence that the 2027 general election will be a choice between continuity and a new direction for Nigeria.
Kwankwaso, in a statement posted on his Facebook page, said the composition of the campaign council showed that many of the political actors who had supported, defended or participated in the present administration were now coming together to campaign for its continuation.
He questioned what the APC would be asking Nigerians to vote for in 2027, saying the election should determine whether the country wanted “a new beginning” or continuation of what he described as a system that had brought severe hardship to citizens.
“The truth is, I see the 2027 election as a struggle between the oppressed Nigerian masses and those who have benefited from, defended and sustained the system responsible for their hardship,” he said.
The former Kano State governor said Nigerians were grappling with rising food and living costs, unemployment, insecurity and declining economic opportunities.
He added that farmers and businesses were struggling to survive, while education, healthcare and other essential public services remained under pressure.
Kwankwaso urged Nigerians to use the 2027 election to reject what he described as continued oppression and demand accountable and people-centred governance.
He cited the recent election outcome in Osun State as an indication that Nigerians could effect political change through the ballot.
If Osun people can do it, so can all other parts of the country,” he said.
Kwankwaso also appealed to Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, who has been appointed Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, to reconsider his decision to lead the campaign.
He said Yari, as a former governor of Zamfara State and prominent North-West politician, should understand the consequences of insecurity, poverty, unemployment, displacement and destruction of livelihoods in the region.
“I therefore will be surprised if in his good conscience, will lead a campaign whose principal objective is to secure the continuation of a government under which many of the people he once governed, and other innocent Nigerians remain trapped in these challenges?” he asked.
The NDC vice presidential candidate also raised questions over the reported inclusion of the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Dr Zacch Adedeji, and the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Dr Tanimu Yakubu Kurfi, in the campaign’s fundraising and finance structures.
