Dress to impress: The modern man’s guide to events

As dating culture continues to evolve, fashion experts say one thing remains constant: first impressions matter. Across restaurants, rooftop lounges, coffee shops, and evening events, men’s fashion is shifting toward refined simplicity, with confidence and authenticity becoming the defining trends of 2026.

Perhaps the most significant trend emerging this year is authenticity. Rather than dressing to impress with luxury labels, men are encouraged to wear clothing that reflects their personality while remaining appropriate for the occasion. Fashion insiders argue that genuine confidence, paired with thoughtful styling, creates a stronger impression than expensive designer pieces alone.

1. Know the venue, then dress one-step up

Rule of thumb: Dress for the place, then add 10%.

Coffee date / daytime stroll: Smart casual wins. Think well-fitted dark jeans or chinos, a clean tee or polo, and minimalist sneakers or loafers. Add a denim jacket or lightweight blazer if the AC is wild.

Dinner date/restaurant: Swap the tee for a button-down shirt. Unstructured blazers, straight-cut trousers, and leather loafers or clean Chelsea boots say “I made an effort.”

Upscale/special occasion: Go full smart. Tailored suit or a two-piece in navy, charcoal, or earth tones. Skip the tie unless the venue demands it, but keep a pocket square for flair.

2. Fit is king

You can wear a ₦500k suit, but if it’s baggy, you’ll look like you borrowed it from your uncle.

Shoulders: Shirt and jacket seams should sit right on your shoulder bone.

Sleeves: Shirt cuffs should peek ¼ inch from your jacket.

Trousers: No bunching at the ankle. A slight break or cropped at the shoe is modern.

T-shirt/tee: Fitted, not skin-tight. If it pulls across the chest, size up.

3. Shoes and grooming close the deal

She’ll notice your shoes first, then your watch, then your teeth.

Shoes: Keep them clean. Scuffed shoes kill an outfit. White sneakers work for casual dates only if they’re spotless. For dinner, pick brown or black leather loafers, derbies, or minimalist Chelsea boots.

Grooming: Fresh haircut 1–2 days before the date, trimmed nails, subtle cologne — 2 sprays max on neck/wrist. And please, iron your clothes.

Accessories: One watch, one ring max. If you wear native, a simple cap or bead bracelet is enough. Don’t compete with Christmas lights.

4. The Nigerian twist: Native with intention

Agbada and kaftan are date-approved if you style them right.

Do: Modern cuts, solid colours or subtle patterns, fitted sleeves, sleek sandals or loafers.

Don’t: Overly bulky embroidery, wrapper prints that belong at Owambe, or caps you keep adjusting all night.

The final check before you step out

Stand in front of a mirror and ask:

1. Does it fit?

2. Is it appropriate for the venue?

3. Would I feel confident if her friends showed up?

If yes, you’re good. The goal isn’t to look like a magazine cover. It’s to look like the best version of yourself — comfortable, put-together, and ready to listen.
