It said this would encourage states to adopt the new strategy to enhance value of road infrastructure nationwide.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Alh. Mohammed Bukar made the disclosure in Abuja,at the commencement of the 23rd national council meeting on works, themed: “Adequate traffic signage – an essential key for highways infrastructure, safety and comfort.”
According to him, the four-day conference will address issues surrounding road signage nationwide adding that this will be implemented through the reviewed highway design manual.
Bukar, who spoke through the ministry’s Director of Highway, Planning and Development, Engr. Chukwunike Uzo explained that the ministry will commence the rollout of signages within the stretches of completed federal road projects next month.
He said the Minister, Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola had issued the directive stressing that the decision became imperative to assist road users, especially visitors in line with international best standards.
His words: “This is one of the most positive council meetings. It is so sad that we have over looked road signage. All along, our focus has been on the big pictures and we forgot the little thing that could impact, change and add value to our road works.
“We want to take our destiny in our hands, provide this facility to our people to make our country visitor friendly and enhance value of the road infrastructure.”
On his part, the Deputy Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kayode Olagunju expressed the corps’ readiness to commence production of the road signage boards once it gets directive from the federal government.
He said the Corps has strong partnership with the ministry and was capable of producing adequate signs for the roads.
Olagunju emphasised that the road signs were designed to inform, direct, guide and warn road users in case of imminent dangers on the road.
“We are aware of certain laws we need to probably change because they may not be inline with the 1968 road signing but those we produce in FRSC are of standards and in line with the convention,” he added.
