Vitiligo is a skin condition many people have heard about but do not fully understand. It affects people of all ages and backgrounds. And while it changes how the skin looks, it does not define a person’s health or worth. Here are seven important things to know about vitiligo.

  • Vitiligo causes loss of skin colour
  • Not contagious
  • It can affect anyone
  • Exact cause is not fully known
  • Not life-threatening
  • Treatment focuses on managing appearance
  • Emotional support matters

Vitiligo causes loss of skin colour

Vitiligo happens when the cells that produce pigment stop working or die. This leads to white patches on different parts of the body, including the face, hands, feet, or even inside the mouth.

Not contagious

You cannot catch vitiligo from touching, hugging, or being close to someone who has it. It is not an infection and cannot be passed from one person to another.

It can affect anyone

Vitiligo affects people of all skin tones, genders, and ages. However, the patches may appear more noticeable on darker skin because of the contrast.

Exact cause is not fully known

Doctors believe vitiligo may be linked to the immune system mistakenly attacking pigment cells. Genetics and certain environmental factors may also play a role.

Not life-threatening

Vitiligo does not cause physical pain or reduce life expectancy. Many people live healthy, full lives with the condition.

Treatment focuses on managing appearance

While there is no permanent cure, treatments such as creams, light therapy, and cosmetic options can help reduce the appearance of patches or even out skin tone for some people.

Emotional support matters

Living with vitiligo can affect confidence and self-esteem, especially in a society that focuses heavily on appearance. Support from family, friends, and understanding communities can make a big difference.
