7 Nigerian schools named after influential figures

Many schools in Nigeria are named after influential figures who passed away but left a significant mark on the country. These individuals, remembered for their contributions to education, politics, science, and social change, continue to inspire students and communities. 

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Education and historical archives give details on the stories behind these names. Here are some of them.

1. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria

Named after Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello University honours one of Nigeria’s most important leaders. Sir Ahmadu Bello was instrumental in Nigeria’s independence and served as the Premier of Northern Nigeria. 

He worked tirelessly to promote unity, education, and development. ABU, one of the country’s most prestigious universities, celebrates his legacy by continuing to advance education and development in Nigeria.

2. Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK)

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, commonly known as UNIZIK, is named after Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first president and one of its founding fathers. Dr. Azikiwe, often called “Zik of Africa,” was a prominent leader and advocate for Nigerian independence. 

His commitment to unity and progress is celebrated through UNIZIK, where students continue to learn about his vision for a stronger, independent Nigeria.

3. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife

Obafemi Awolowo University was named in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a visionary leader, nationalist, and one of Nigeria’s most influential politicians. 

Awolowo was dedicated to advancing education, especially in the Western Region, where he established free primary education. OAU, known for its academic excellence, serves as a testament to Awolowo’s  impact on Nigerian education.

4. Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU)

Michael Okpara University is named after Dr. Michael Okpara, a respected politician and Premier of Eastern Nigeria during the First Republic. Known for his emphasis on agricultural development, Dr. Okpara promoted food security and economic growth in Nigeria. 

MOUAU continues his legacy by focusing on agricultural studies, preparing students to contribute to Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

5. Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri

Named after Dr. Alvan Ikoku, a prominent educationist and politician, Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education is dedicated to training teachers and advancing education in Nigeria. 

Dr. Ikoku played an important role in shaping educational policy in Nigeria,  by advocating for quality and accessible education for all. The college honours his lifelong commitment to empowering students and educators.

6. Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA)

Adekunle Ajasin University is named after Chief Adekunle Ajasin, a former governor of Ondo State and advocate for educational development. 

As governor, Ajasin worked tirelessly to improve educational access and quality in Ondo State. AAUA continues Ajasin’s legacy by promoting academic growth and development in Nigeria’s southwest.

7. Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma

Ambrose Alli University is named after Professor Ambrose Alli, the former governor of Bendel State (now Edo and Delta States). Alli prioritised education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. 

He established multiple universities and institutions and created opportunities for thousands of Nigerian students. AAU honours his legacy of educational excellence and social progress.

These Nigerian schools named after dead people continue to celebrate the legacies of national heroes. As students walk through the halls of these schools, they are reminded of the incredible contributions of these people.
