Stomach ulcers, also known as peptic ulcers, are painful sores that develop in the lining of the stomach or small intestine. While medication and proper care can help manage them, certain everyday habits may make the condition worse and slow down healing. Being aware of these habits can help ulcer patients avoid unnecessary discomfort and complications.

Contents
  • 1. Skipping Meals
  • 2. Overusing Painkillers
  • 3. Smoking
  • 4. Drinking Too Much Alcohol
  • 5. Eating Spicy and Acidic Foods
  • 6. Ignoring Stress Management
  • 7. Lying Down Immediately After Eating

1. Skipping Meals

Going for long hours without food increases stomach acid levels, which can irritate the ulcer and cause sharp pain. Eating smaller, frequent meals helps protect the stomach lining.

2. Overusing Painkillers

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and aspirin can damage the stomach lining when taken often. People with ulcers should only use them under medical advice.

3. Smoking

Cigarette smoking not only delays ulcer healing but also increases the risk of developing new ulcers. Nicotine raises stomach acid production, which worsens irritation.

4. Drinking Too Much Alcohol

Alcohol irritates and erodes the stomach lining, making ulcers more painful. Heavy drinking can also interfere with medications prescribed for ulcer treatment.

5. Eating Spicy and Acidic Foods

While food doesn’t directly cause ulcers, spicy and acidic meals can trigger burning pain and discomfort in people already living with the condition.

6. Ignoring Stress Management

Stress doesn’t directly cause ulcers, but it can worsen symptoms. High stress levels may increase stomach acid production and make it harder for ulcers to heal.

7. Lying Down Immediately After Eating

Going to bed or lying flat right after a meal can trigger acid reflux, increasing irritation for ulcer patients. It’s better to wait at least two to three hours before lying down.
