Suicide is never an easy subject to talk about; it is complicated and tragic, but often preventable.
The truth is, behind the smile of a colleague, a friend’s “I’m fine,” or the quiet withdrawal of a loved one, there may be hidden struggles that need urgent attention. Knowing the warning signs of suicide and how to get help can save lives.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), here are five warning signs that someone may be considering suicide:
1. Talking about wanting to die or being a burden
When a person frequently talks about wanting to die, perhaps because they are feeling overwhelming guilt, shame, or believing they are a burden to others it may be a serious cry for help.
2. Expressing feelings of hopelessness
Someone who feels empty, trapped, or sees no reason to live may be at risk. Extreme sadness, anxiety, agitation, or intense rage are emotional indicators that should not be ignored.
3. Making plans or searching for ways to die
Researching methods, drafting a will, giving away important items, or saying goodbye to loved ones are major red flags. These behaviours often signal intent.
4. Withdrawal and risky behaviour
Pulling away from friends and family, isolating from social activities, or engaging in reckless acts such as dangerous driving or substance abuse can be signs of suicidal thoughts.
5. Extreme changes in mood, sleep, or habits
Mood swings, sleeping or eating much more or less than usual, and increased use of drugs or alcohol are also concerning behaviours that may point to suicidal ideation.
