Despite ongoing wars and rising global tensions, some nations continue to stand out as havens of peace and security. The 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), published by the Institute for Economics & Peace, highlights countries that have consistently prioritised safety, stability and social harmony.
The index measures 23 indicators, including external conflicts, homicide rates, terrorism impact and military expenditure. Remarkably, the countries at the top have maintained their positions for nearly two decades, underscoring the long-term benefits of peaceful policies.
Here are the top five safest countries to live in 2025, according to the report:
1. Iceland
Holding the number one spot on the list of safest countries since 2008, Iceland remains the world’s most peaceful nation. The country leads across all three domains: safety and security, ongoing conflict and militarisation. Residents attribute this calm to strong community ties, gender equality and low crime rates. Local police do not carry guns, and it is common to see babies left safely outside shops in prams while parents run errands.
2. Ireland
Once defined by conflict, modern-day Ireland has embraced peace. It records low crime rates, minimal militarisation and strong community bonds. Known for its warm hospitality, residents emphasise how strangers readily help one another. The country maintains neutrality on the global stage, relying on diplomacy rather than military alliances.
3. New Zealand
Moving up two places this year, New Zealand boasts strict gun laws, universal healthcare and a strong sense of community. Residents often leave their doors unlocked, children walk to school safely and neighbours are quick to lend a hand. Beyond its breathtaking landscapes, New Zealand is praised for its slower rhythm of life and emphasis on family-friendly environments.

4. Austria
Austria slipped one spot to fourth but remains one of the safest places in the world. Its long-standing policy of neutrality allows it to focus on investing in healthcare, education and social welfare. Residents describe a culture of trust where homes are left unlocked and bicycles unchained, reflecting everyday security.
5. Singapore
Ranked sixth overall but the safest in Asia, Singapore is known for its strict laws, efficient governance and low crime rates. Despite high military expenditure, its streets are among the safest globally, with residents reporting they can walk alone at night without fear. The country’s sense of order and security has made it a standout in the region.
