21 bag first class as JABU holds 11th convocation

About 21 students of the Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State have graduated with first-class as the institution holds its 11th convocation on Friday.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Kola Sonaike, who disclosed this on Monday during a press conference to herald the 11th convocation ceremony of the school, disclosed that a total of 430 students from its seven colleges
and various academic programmes would be graduating at the convocation

Sonaike explained that 395 of the students would receive first degree certificates, comprising 21 first-class honours, 181 second class upper, 157 second class lower and 36 third class, respectively.

According to him, four students would be honoured with postgraduate diplomas, while 31 others would receive masters degrees.

“For first degrees, 83 of the graduating students come from the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, 24 from the College of Environmental Sciences, 95 from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 70 from the College of Law and 123 from the College of Management Sciences.”

He disclosed that the best graduating student, Miss Esther Adebusola Fashola from the department of Mass Communication graduated with a CGPA of 4.89

The Vice-Chancellor said four eminent personalities would be conferred with honorary doctorate degree awards during the ceremony, saying “worthy of note is the fact that we are bestowing our highest honours on four eminent personalities in Nigeria.

“The recipients are individual who have distinguished themselves in various fields of human endeavours. They will be honoured with Honorary Doctorate degrees of the university.”

He said the awardee include Air Chief Marshall and former Chief of Defence Staff, Oluseyi Peter and Managing Director/CEO of First Registrars and Investors Service Ltd, Pastor Bayo Olugbemi.

Others include Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Public Procurement, and Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on NDDC.

He said the recipients have actively engaged themselves in the pursuit of service for the global community and humanity, a have contributed to the development and growth of the country, saying “all of them will be honoured and will be received into Hall of Alumni of JABU.”

The Vice-Chancellor said that the convocation lecture would be delivered by former Minister of External Affairs, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, on Thursday.

Sonaike maintained that the institution had put all mechanisms in place to comply strictly with laid down Covid-19 guidelines, adding that the university’s Covid-19 isolation centre was also well equipped.

Sonaike, who described the university as an entrepreneural-based institution with quality and best teaching, explained that JABU is determined in building and churning out job creators and self-sufficient students.

“We are determined to ensure continuous improvement in the quality of our academic programmes for the production of highly qualified and skilled graduates who will be self-reliant and job creators.

“Our university is structured into five colleges, comprising 23 programmes, and fully accredited and the college of postgraduate studies with 25 programmes at the postgraduate diploma, masters and doctoral levels,” he said.
