Calls for more women participation politics as well as representation in political appointments take center stage at the third edition of the Women in Politics Sensitization program in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on saturday.
The program which is a significant step towards promoting women’s participation in politics was organized by Women empowerment advocate and entrepreneur , Farmer Omolara Svensson Busari.
The event themed “Understanding Our Role in Active Politics,” aimed to empower women, strengthen democracy, break barriers, build leaders, and balance power.
Speaking at the event, the host ,Farmer Omolara Svensson Busari, lamented the low rate of women representation in the political scene of the country.
According to her, the program was designed to address the low representation of women in active politics, which she believes is detrimental to the nation’s progress.
“My target is to see more women in active politics, I want to see more women run for political offices, especially in Oyo State,” she emphasized.
Busari who stated that the program was not politically funded but by her personal effort and some other members , said they were determined to change the status quo.
“If you do the statistics, Oyo State is lagging behind when it comes to women participation and representation in active politics and politically appointed offices.
“One of the reasons why we are where we are is because women has not been part of decision making as a nation That’s just the bitter truth and things have to change.”, She stressed
In an interview with newsmenn, Oyo State All Progressives Congress (APC) Women Leader, Alhaja Tinuade Adigun noted that the program would help bring more women into politics and aswell gather support from their husbands.
She highlighted the importance of women’s participation in decision-making processes, adding that their absence has contributed to the nation’s current state.
Also, the APC Women Leader in Egbeda Local Government of the state , Honourable Aderonke Adedeji stated that the program aimed to sensitize women on their fundamental rights and encourage them to participate in politics.
“The program is aimed at sensitising women on what their fundamental rights are as a Nigerian citizen to come out and actively participate in politics so as to ask for what is duly theirs.
“We are encouraging them to come out and show interest, then other necessary things will be done to support them” she said
Also, a candidate for the Oyo State House of Assembly, Honourable Aina Oke- Are stressed the need for mentorship in politics, saying that many women lack guidance and experience.
“Most women in politics don’t have mentors, they took the risk to join politics maybe because of their antecedents, ability or capacity, believing they could just have their way. Most times it doesn’t work that way.
“So, with this great opportunity given to women, it’s going to be a platform that most women that needs mentorship from many women with lots of experience to share.” She stated.
