Ahead of the next general elections, stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC), North-Central region, have urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to retain incumbent Vice President, Kashim Shettima as his running mate.
The party chieftains operating under the platform, North Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum, made the appeal in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
The Forum chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, declared that “the North Central APC Forum rejects calls for President Bola Tinubu to drop Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate in 2027.
“These calls are not from stakeholders within the APC in the North Central zone. We disassociate ourselves from such suggestions and emphasise that our endorsement of President Tinubu for the 2027 election includes Vice President Shettima.”
Checks by Tribune Online revealed that Zazzaga was apparently reacting to a declaration by another group in the zone, the North-Central Renaissance Movement (NCRM), which recently called on President Tinubu to consider the North-Central for the Vice President slot.
Zazzaga maintained that any attempt to disrupt the current ticket would be counterproductive.
“We urge Mr President to disregard the antics of individuals and groups attempting to derail his administration, which has made significant strides in repositioning Nigeria for sustainable growth and development.
“As we did in 2023, the North Central APC Forum assures President Tinubu and his supporters of our unwavering commitment to work for his re-election in 2027.
“The Muslim-Muslim ticket will not affect President Tinubu’s chances in the Middle Belt. With key positions held by Middle Belt Christians, we believe the region will continue to support his leadership.
“The President’s performance in office will be the determining factor. There is no need to change a strategy that was successful,” Zazzaga said.
