The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has commended the recent political engagement between the 2023 Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, a key leader in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. AbdulRazak Ahmed, DWI described Obi’s visit as a significant step towards national unity and political collaboration.
The group commended Obi for recognizing the PDP’s influence as the leading opposition party and for positioning himself within mainstream political discourse.
Obi’s visit to Bauchi also included a courtesy call on His Royal Highness, the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji (Dr) Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu.
DWI highlighted this gesture as a demonstration of Obi’s commitment to engaging with traditional institutions, which play a crucial role in fostering peace and unity in Nigerian society.
Governor Bala Mohammed lauded Obi’s efforts towards nation-building and inclusive leadership, emphasizing the importance of collaboration beyond party lines.
DWI echoed this sentiment, calling for constructive dialogue over political antagonism. The group also urged Obi to sustain the momentum of his engagement with the PDP, suggesting that he could play a transformative role in shaping Nigeria’s political future.
DWI contrasted Obi’s approach with that of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, stating that while El-Rufai seems to be operating from the political margins, Obi has positioned himself at the forefront of a movement that prioritizes unity and progress.
The organization also endorsed Governor Bala Mohammed’s message of “politics without bitterness,” emphasizing that mutual respect and collective responsibility are crucial for Nigeria’s development.
“As our nation grapples with complex challenges, unity must be our guiding principle. Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and its ability to foster a common purpose,” the statement read.
DWI expressed optimism about the impact of Obi’s engagement with the PDP and called on other political leaders to embrace dialogue and inclusivity in the pursuit of national advancement.
