Former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has cautioned former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan against returning to partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Lamido, in a statement posted on his Facebook page, said Jonathan should remain above the nation’s “murky political arena” and preserve the dignity attached to his status as a former President and elder statesman.
According to him, the former Nigerian leader occupies a unique position both nationally and globally, stressing that it would be inappropriate to drag him into what he described as a politically charged atmosphere dominated by “self-seeking and self-serving characters.”
He noted that the calls urging Jonathan to contest in 2027 were emerging at a time political parties in the country remained fragmented and largely driven by power struggles rather than ideology.

“It is unfair and ill-opportune to drag his person into the current murky political arena populated by unserious, self-seeking and self-serving characters barely a week to the close of nominations for the 2027 general election,” Lamido stated.
The former governor argued that the growing clamour for Jonathan’s return reflected the frustration and hopelessness many Nigerians currently feel about the state of the nation.
While acknowledging that the appeals might be well-intentioned, Lamido described them as “desperation calls” lacking deeper political direction.
“For now, President Jonathan needs to maintain his dignified position as our sovereign symbol,” he added.
He further urged the former President not to succumb to pressure or emotional appeals, insisting that Nigeria should preserve Jonathan’s image and statesmanship for the future.
