IMMEDIATE past Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Dr Michael Tidi, has endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) decision to cede the presidency to the South, describing it as both fair and necessary for Nigeria’s unity.
Reacting to the announcement made by the PDP national body in Abuja, Tidi said the move reflected the party’s founding ideals of inclusiveness and federal balance.
“As a devoted member of our great party, the PDP, I consider the decision to zone the presidency to the South not only prudent but entirely consistent with the spirit of equity, inclusiveness and federal balance upon which our party was founded,” the oil and gas analyst said.
He explained that zoning was not a denial of merit but a stabilising framework to protect Nigeria’s democracy.
“It is not a repudiation of merit but rather an affirmation that leadership, capacity and vision can be found in every part of Nigeria,” Tidi said.
On concerns raised in the North, Tidi, who’s also a lawyer, argued that national realities demanded balance.
“The immediate past president, who served two full terms, is from the North and held office under the APC. In the interest of national cohesion and political balance, it is both fair and necessary that power now returns to the South,” he explained.
Calling for unity, the former council boss urged the PDP to rally behind a credible Southern candidate.
“Zoning is not exclusion. It is a political expression of belonging and a conscious effort to preserve the delicate balance that holds our democracy together,” Tidi, who has refused to defect with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and others to the All Progressives Congress (APC), added.
