The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukuma Charles Soludo, has called on Nigerian youths to abstain from drug abuse and trafficking.
Governor Soludo made the call during this year’s 2023 International Youth Day celebration with a 6.5km “Walk and Run For Life” at the Awka Township Stadium alongside his wife and the convener of the Healthy Living Campaign, Mrs Nonye Soludo.
While advising youths to stay away from drugs, pointed out that it constitutes health hazards and destruction of human development.
He explained that the increasing addiction to hard drugs, especially methamphetamine, popularly known as crystal meth, glass and ice or Mkpurummiri in local parlance, by youths in Anambra, has reached a worrisome stage and appealed to the youth to “Say No to the menace.
According to him, youth should say no to drug abuse for the sake of healthy living and safe society. We need our youths to be sane and hardworking. Our people (Igbo) are known for hardworking, integrity and for industrialisation.
“Our youths are our today and tomorrow, my administration will continue to give total support to the youth in all self-reliance programmes in the state.
On Sports Development, the governor assures that he will mainstream Sport Economy into his administrative agenda in order to revive all sporting activities in the State, noting that Sport is a Wealth Healthy and is the Future.
Hon. Patrick Agha-Mba, the State Commissioner for Youth Development, in his welcome address, reestated that Governor Soludo’s administration will continue to champion massive youth empowerment, job and wealth creation to accelerate economic growth and development in the state through “One Youth Two Skills” programme.
The Commissioner noted that the “One Youth Two Skills” programme, was initiated, aimed at proffering solutions to youth restiveness and crimes by ensuring that youths acquire skills and are positively engaged.
He commended Soludo for his effort in making Anambra safe, describing him as the pillar of Youths.
Speaking in line with this year’s theme: *”Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World.” the State Commissioner for Environment Engr Felix Odimegwu, advocate for the establishment of Environmental clubs across schools in the country.
He said the clubs if implemented, will encourage the students to develop the habit of keeping themselves and their immediate clean always.
Corps Members led by the state coordinator, Mrs Blessing Ekene Iruma, ASATU Youths, NYCN representatives and top government officials also witnessed the celebration.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the annual International Youth Day is a United Nations initiative to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youths and to celebrate the potential of youths as partners in today’s global society.
