2019 : Controversy trails APC National, State Assembly primaries in Bauchi

BauchiA lingering crisis has engulfed Bauchi state chapter of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), following the release of results of the National and State House of Assembly primaries conducted in the state last weekend as announced by the Chairman of the committee that conducted the exercise, Professor Ahmed Bakori Mohammed.
As it is now the announcement has brewed a lot of controversies among members of the party as some of them are claiming that the announcement did not reflect the actual thing that happened when the primaries were conducted last Friday.
All the aggrieved aspirants who participated in the exercise have alleged that there was no election held in most areas where the APC has now declared results, while in some places violence was recorded among others electoral illegalities alleged.

The controversy came on Monday following the release of the results of the  primaries by the Chairman of the  Electoral Committee in the state, Professor Bakori Muhammad who gave the names of the candidates who purportedly emerged winners of the elections, but the number of votes scored by each of the contestants were not made public in the list as was done during the gubernatorial primaries.
The list issued to press men contained names of candidates for the 3 senatorial positions, 12 House of Representatives positions and 30 State House of Assembly positions.
But in a swift reaction to the development, a group known as the ‘Bauchi State Good Governance Link’ which is based in Bauchi raised alarm over the National Assembly results as released, saying that there was no conduct of the APC senatorial, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly primaries in most parts of the state.
Secretary-General of the Organization, Hamza Jafar made this known on Tuesday while briefing newsmen in Bauchi expressing dissatisfaction over the inability of President Muhammad Buhari to intervene in the controversial primaries held in Bauchi State.
The political pressure group stated that “considering the irregularities experienced during the conduct of the APC primary elections in the state, there is a need for the President to intervene to ensure equal treatment to all the states.”

“We are appealing to President Buhari to find a lasting solution to the issue of the non-conduct of the election in the Bauchi state due to the massive support given to him by the people of the state. This trend is unhealthy for our democratic system of government and must be addressed by the National leadership of the party” Jafar further said.

But in another swift reaction to the development, an ardent supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari in Bauchi State, Alhaji Ali Saidu said the group rather than accusing the President, should tender their complaints to appropriate authorities.

“The reason why the President has remained neutral and silent to the issues of  electoral irregularities and intimidation experienced during the conduct of the APC primary elections is due to his respect for the party by not interfering in election matters which has a committee charged with the responsibility of resolving such complaints in the party,” he said.

When contacted for his reaction, one of the contestants for the State House of Assembly seat who was earlier on declared winner simply said, “we are following the situation and I am confident that justice will be done. The people have spoken and so their wishes must be respected.”

As at the time of this report, no state official of the party was ready to comment because according to them the exercise was conducted by the National Secretariat of the party.
