An Ekiti based socio-political pressure group, The True Face of Ekiti, has been inaugurated in Ado Ekiti, the state capital and announced that among others things, it would screen aspirants for the 2018 governorship election in the state.
At the inauguration of the non-partisan group, the Chief Operating Officer of the group, Mr. Tosin Jegede, said the group would liaise with the two major political parties in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure that credible people emerged as the governorship candidates during the 2018 governorship poll.
Jegede, who said the group had over 200 active members from the 16 local government areas of the state, lamented what he described as “the decadence in the moral and ethical values of Ekiti people,” saying “most of the bad leaders in the country through compromise on the part of the political parties, which field such people as candidates.”
Speaking on the occasion, Jegede pointed out that the electorate was “often times left with no option than to choose among the worst candidates flying the party’s flags.”
Jegede vowed that the group would fight to reawaken the political consciousness of the people of the state by sensitizing the grassroots on how to stop politicians from taking advantage of the poverty in the system to foist bad governance.
He said: “This often contributes to our woes as a people. Charlatans and those who have no respect for Ekiti’s core values of dignity, self-respect and hard work are always came out to become leaders, the 2018 election will be different.
“We will complement the parties in decision-making process before the primaries by engaging the aspirants and ensure that those with the right passion to develop Ekiti are endorsed by this group for Ekiti electorate.
“With this, whoever emerges governor will be a blessing to our people since those flying the parties flags were well scrutinized and found to possess the right credentials and moral standard to lead our people.”
Jegede, who said membership cut across global, national and local strata, urged the youths to embark on aggressive membership drives, so that the vision to take Ekiti to a greater height won’t be a mirage.”
