All is set for the 8th Western Zone Open Golf Championship 2023 at the Ibadan Golf Club (IGC), Onireke, Ibadan.
The tournament is being organised by the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) from April 20 to 22 where over 200 golfers both male and female are expected to compete for honours.
Speaking at a press briefing to herald the tournament, former Zonal vice president, Western zone of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN), Mrs Mary Okunola, said the tournament is being organised to celebrate golf and discover more talents in the ladies section of the LGAN.
Okunola, who is a former Lady Captain of IGC and Tiger Golf Club said LGAN is an association and also a regulatory institution that coordinates the affairs of ladies that play golf in Nigeria.
She disclosed that IGC is hosting the Western Zone Open Golf Championship 2023 as the club is known for championing ladies and golf tournaments over the years which has produced a number of zonal vice presidents including herself.
“We are here to compete and in this competition, we have golfers coming from different clubs within and outside the country to join us. In this competition, winners will emerge that will represent the country at international level.
“We are well prepared, the course is ready and IGC is known for hospitality and we are ready to take care of our guests.
Also, the number of female golf players in Nigeria and first vice president of LGAN, Western zone, Evelyn Oyome said over 80 ladies will be participating while 110 men will compete in different categories.
She said “We are here to celebrate LGAN, we are here to celebrate ourselves and more importantly we have guest players who are men coming from all over the country to come and rejoice with us.
“The 8th Western Zone Open Golf Championship has come to stay as we all know that golf is life.
The guest arrival is on Thursday as Ladies are coming all over the country and the event will take place on Friday and Saturday where the champion will emerge.
Oyome thanked IGC Captain, Mr Tunji Oladosu and his executive for allowing them to make use of the club and also to other clubs under western zone like Ilorin Golf Club, Cross Creek Golf Club, Ikoyi Golf Club, Ikeja Golf Club, Tiger Golf Club, Asabari Golf Club, and Dolphin Golf Club, among others.
Among the members present at the briefing were Oyinlola Omajuwa, Mary Onyejose, Patience Ekwere, Temitope Farombi, Hannah Obadina, Kola Ogunjobi, Benard Nduka and Sunny Osubo.
