2 final year students of Adeleke varsity remanded in prison over alleged murder

A magistrates’ court in Osogbo, Osun State, on Friday, ordered that two final year students of Adeleke University, Ede, be remanded in prison custody over the alleged murder of a 200 level student.

The accused, Akanbi Ademola Khalyd (23) and Vera Cruz Anthony Babashola (22) were arraigned before Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

The victim, identified as Adeyemi Yusuf, was studying Computer Information System at the university before he was allegedly tortured to death.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Oladoye Joshua, the accused allegedly committed the offence on 27 March, 2018 at about 12.01 p.m. at Adeleke University, Ede.

The charge sheet reads, “That you, Akanbi Ademola Khalyd, and Vera Cruz Anthony Babashola and others now at large on the 27th day of March, 2018 at about 12 hours in Ede Magisterial District sitting in Osogbo conspired among yourselves to commit felony to wit:  murder and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Volume II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

He told the court that the defendants unlawfully killed Adeyemi Yusuf, a 200 level student of Computer Information System Department by torturing him to death.

Joshua stressed that the offences contravened Section 324 and were punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34 volume II, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

The pleas of the duo were not taken due to the seriousness of the offence.

Magistrate Ayilara ordered that the duo be remanded in Ilesa prison, just as he directed that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

The court adjourned the matter to June 29, 2018 for mention at the Ede jurisdictional area.
