NO fewer than one hundred and thirty persons with disabilities had so far been provided with artificial legs, hands by the Anambra State government.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on persons with disabilities Bar. Bernard Ezewuzie who disclosed this in an interview with Newsmen in his office at the women development centre Awka, the Anambra States Capital, said the wife of the Governor provided the artificial limbs as part of her contributions to provide succour to persons with disabilities in the state.
The Senior Special Assistant enumerated some of the government’s policies and programs for persons with disabilities in the state to include, offering the political appointment to seven members of the joint Association of persons with disabilities, including three permanent secretaries, employment of 64 disabled graduates in the state civil service.
He, however, said that most challenging problem is the passage of the bill on the United Nations policy on the Right of persons with disabilities to be enshrined in their local laws statue that promotes and protects their rights.
He said “In Anambra State, there is a bill called Anambra State bill on the right of persons with disabilities” Now this bill has passed first and second readings but it appears it has been stalled somewhere along the line”.

The bill was referred to a committee headed by Hon Nicky Ugochukwu member representing Orumba South constituency in the Anambra States House of Assembly ” The SSA further stated that the Speaker of the State House of Assembly Hon Mrs Rita Maduagwu had also promised to do the needful as soon as the bill is presented to her.
He appealed to the committee to present the bill for the third reading and subsequent passage into law.
On the motivation Hon Ezewuzie sad governor Obiano appreciated Mr Augustine Nwabunwanne a. blind teacher who wrote a mathematics textbook with 1 million recently.
He also promised to make a case for Mr Tiochukwu Offojebe a blind teacher at urban girls secondary school Ekwulobia who authored 16 books and teaches Physics, Mathematics, chemistry for distinguishing himself as a special person to the Governor
