12 years Inmate regains freedom, receives life-sustaining skills

An ex-offender named Daniel Joseph Aturu, who had been convicted of conspiracy and possession of stolen property in 2012, has regained his freedom from incarceration with a remarkable skill acquired during his time in prison.

Daniel was sent to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Owerri, Imo state, to serve a 12-year sentence. When he entered the correctional facility, he initially felt depressed and dejected, but after a few days, he adjusted to his new condition and availed himself of rehabilitation and reformation programs offered by the Custodial Centre.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Imo State Command, Goodluck Uboegbulam, Daniel, being a Christian, started attending religious activities and other restorative programs to mend walls with his creator and achieve healing and reparation. He aimed to forgive himself and achieve inner peace, understanding that his criminal behavior had hurt his victim and society.

Daniel also joined vocational and skills acquisition programs to empower himself, choosing to engage in laundry and dry-cleaning. When his 12-year sentence came to an end on January 29, 2024, the management of the Medium Security Custodial Centre Owerri, in collaboration with a philanthropist, presented him with a washing machine to aid his effective resettlement and provide him with a means of earning a living.

During his time in prison, Daniel provided dry-cleaning and laundry services to fellow inmates, the custodial center’s community, and the society in general. He perfected his skills and earned goodwill and patronage from clients. Through this activity, Daniel was able to earn money for himself.

The Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) in charge of the Custodial Centre, Eke C. Eke, while discharging the ex-offender, encouraged him to remain focused and continue to exhibit good conduct and behavior, as demonstrated during his time in custody.
