Yobe State government has stepped up efforts to commence the airlifting of pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj from the Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport (MBICA), Damaturu, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
A statement by the Director-General, Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Mamman Mohammed, said the agreement completed key institutional requirements after earlier MoUs with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).
He noted that the agreements have aligned the airport with regulatory standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), adding that operational documents had been completed while certification processes are ongoing.
The move, Mohammed said, aligned with Governor Mai Mala Buni’s agenda to position Yobe as a strategic aviation and logistics hub in the North-East.
