Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxic protein used for various medical and cosmetic purposes. 

 

It is often injected in small doses to temporarily paralyse or weaken muscles by blocking the nerves that control muscle contractions. 

 

Botox treatment is minimally intrusive but safe and effective for fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. It is also used to relax the forehead between the eyes temporarily.

 

Interestingly, Botox has other therapeutic applications beyond cosmetic use, including the treatment of certain medical conditions like chronic migraines, muscle spasms, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and overactive bladder, among others.

 

Botox works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contractions. The injected botulinum toxin binds to the nerve endings near the injection site and prevents the release of acetylcholine, thereby temporarily inhibiting muscle activity. 

 

After administration, it usually takes about 24-72 hours for Botox to take effect in the muscle. The effects of Botox typically last for three to six months, after which the muscle activity gradually returns, and wrinkles may reappear.
