Sean Nelson, Senior Counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) International, has briefed key members of the United States House Appropriations Committee on the deteriorating security situation facing Christians in Nigeria, calling for urgent action to halt what he described as one of the “worst persecution situations in the world.”

The roundtable discussion included influential Appropriators Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart, Robert Aderholt, Riley Moore, Scott Franklin, and Mark Alford.

As members of the committee responsible for reviewing the federal budget and conducting oversight on funding decisions line-by-line, these lawmakers hold significant sway over US foreign aid and diplomatic resource allocation.

During the briefing, Nelson discussed the experiences of escalating violence and terror. He argued that the crisis is not just a humanitarian disaster, but also a strategic pivot point for the region.

“This is a real opportunity to stop one of the worst persecution situations in the world,” Nelson told the lawmakers.

“And if resolved, it will be an immense social, economic, and security benefit for Nigeria, Africa, and its Global Partners, including the U.S.”

Nelson, a former atheist turned Catholic who now advocates for religious freedom, emphasised the timeliness of potential intervention.

“Too many times, we’ve said it’s too late. We waited until late,” Nelson stated. “Here, we do not have to wait until it is too late, we can act with a real chance of success, now.”

His words, ““This is a real opportunity to stop one of the worst persecution situations in the world. and if resolved, it will be a immense social, economic, and security benefit for Nigeria, Africa, and its Global Partners, including the U.S too many times, we’ve said it’s too late. We waited until late, here, we do not have to wait until it is too late, we can act with a real chance of success, now”.
