The Nigeria INGO Forum (NIF) has called for the support of international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) operating in Nigeria to bring to the forefront ideas and solutions that will ease the burden of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) scattered across various camps across the country.
This was the discussion at the NIF Media Dialogue 2024 with the theme ‘Understanding the role of INGOs in offering durable solutions to displacements in Nigeria’, which was held on Thursday in Abuja.
The panel of discussants, which comprises the managing editor, HumAngle, Hauwa Shaffii Nuhu; the editor-in-chief of the Daily Trust, Naziru Mukail Abubakar; and the country director, Search for Common Ground Nigeria, Fatima Abubakar, spoke on the need to rally around the IDPs and provide for their basic needs.
The dialogue dwelled on the conflict in the North West and North East regions of Nigeria, which has led to the widespread displacement of Nigerians, especially women and children, as a result of Boko Haram insurgents, kidnappings, abductions, and banditry. While underscoring the need for durable solutions, the panellists recognised the role media coverage plays in ensuring balanced and informed reporting that sheds light on the situation.
It was agreed that there should be a collaborative exchange between INGOs and media representatives to put the reports from the camps in proper perspective.
The NIF, with 56 members and nine observers, has supported its members to promote a collective approach to issues, address key concerns, and speak with one voice on operational realities locally, nationally, and internationally with the primary intention of saving lives and reducing the suffering caused by conflict, poverty, and diseases.
Founded in 2014, NIF is an alliance of international NGOs providing humanitarian and development assistance in Nigeria to save and improve the lives of the vulnerable.
