Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasised that the timely execution of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) Programme would play a pivotal role in transforming Nigeria’s agricultural landscape, fostering innovation, and promoting inclusive prosperity.
Speaking through the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, at the groundbreaking ceremony of the SAPZ project in Ijaiye, Ibadan, Oyo State, Shettima described the initiative as a catalyst for industrialisation and economic empowerment in the agriculture sector.
“We are laying the foundation for agro-industrial hubs that will empower farmers and agro-processors, stimulate local economies, and position Nigeria competitively in global markets,” the Vice President said.

He further noted that the SAPZ program represents a significant step in Nigeria’s quest to become a self-reliant and prosperous nation.
“This is not merely an infrastructure project. It’s a bold declaration that our future lies in transforming our vast agricultural resources into value-added products that drive industrial growth, create jobs, and improve rural livelihoods,” he added.
Shettima highlighted the SAPZ initiative as a major pillar of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to restore national dignity, unlock economic potential, and create opportunities for all Nigerians.
“It reflects our unwavering commitment to a future where hope is renewed through concrete action, strategic partnerships, and inclusive growth,” he said.
The Vice President also credited the program’s success to robust collaboration between the Federal Government, state governments, and international development partners—including the African Development Bank (AfDB), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).
Commending the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde and Shettima acknowledged his leadership and dedication to development.
“Your commitment to the growth of Oyo State has made this milestone possible. This event is a shining example of the power of partnership and shared vision,” he said.
He also disclosed that he recently led Nigeria’s delegation to the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where SAPZ was showcased as the country’s flagship investment in agricultural transformation.
During the summit, he held bilateral talks with IFAD President Dr. Alvaro Lario to seek additional funding for the expansion of SAPZ in participating states.
“This collaborative effort highlights our shared belief that sustainable agricultural development requires unity, innovation, and collective responsibility,” Shettima said, affirming Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging global expertise and financing for inclusive growth.
He reiterated President Tinubu’s strong commitment to the program under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, revealing plans to expand the SAPZ initiative to all 36 states of the federation.
“In partnership with the African Development Bank, we will onboard 27 additional states in phases, starting with 10 states by the first quarter of 2026, following financing procedures,” he announced.
