The Middle East faces a period of profound uncertainty following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in a joint United States–Israeli strike, a development that has triggered immediate retaliation from Tehran and raised fears of a broader regional conflict.
Iranian state media confirmed early Sunday that the 86-year-old cleric had been killed after coordinated attacks targeted military and government facilities in Tehran. According to the Saudi Gazette, thick smoke was seen rising over parts of the capital as explosions struck areas near the supreme leader’s offices.
US President Donald Trump described the operation as a necessary move to neutralize threats linked to Iran’s missile and nuclear capabilities, calling it a decisive moment for the Iranian people.

Within hours, Iran launched missiles and drones toward Israeli territory and US military installations in the region, prompting several countries to activate air defense systems and tighten security.
In its coverage, CNN characterized Khamenei’s killing as a seismic shift that plunges Iran into uncharted political territory. The network reported that strikes devastated parts of his residential and administrative compound in Tehran, citing satellite imagery showing extensive structural damage.
Khamenei, who assumed leadership in 1989 following the death of Ruhollah Khomeini, wielded ultimate authority over Iran’s armed forces, judiciary and key state institutions. Over nearly four decades, he shaped Tehran’s adversarial posture toward the United States and Israel while expanding Iran’s regional reach through allied armed groups.
CNN also noted that his tenure was defined by a controversial nuclear program, deepening Western sanctions and repeated waves of domestic unrest. In recent years, Iran’s economy has struggled under mounting pressure, while diplomatic efforts, including talks mediated by Oman, failed to secure a breakthrough before the latest escalation.
With no publicly confirmed successor, Iran now confronts a potential leadership struggle within its clerical establishment and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Analysts warn that the fallout could reverberate far beyond Tehran, reshaping alliances and security calculations across the region.
As governments brace for further escalation, the end of the Khamenei era marks not only a turning point for Iran’s political future but also a defining moment for the Middle East’s fragile balance of power.
