A group, the Southern Youth Association of Nigeria (SYAN), has condemned the circulation of fake and misleading information about purported bandit attacks across the country, saying the practice is aimed at creating unnecessary panic and an exaggerated sense of insecurity.

The youth group, in a statement signed by its National President, Pastor Okikiola Fayomi, urged Nigerians to desist from spreading unsubstantiated claims of bandit attacks and to join forces with the government in tackling the challenge of insecurity.

It also enjoined governments at all levels to strengthen security infrastructure around schools by constructing perimeter fences, installing functional CCTV cameras, and deploying security personnel to school environments.

The group sympathised with the families of the abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State and urged them to remain hopeful and prayerful as security agencies and relevant government authorities continue to work tirelessly towards ensuring the safe rescue and return of the victims.

The statement read in part: “The Southern Youth Association of Nigeria (SYAN) calls on governments at all levels to treat issues concerning education and the safety of students with the utmost seriousness by taking proactive and sustainable measures to safeguard learning environments across the country.

“We strongly advocate the provision of adequate infrastructure in all schools, including perimeter fencing, the installation of functional CCTV surveillance systems, and the deployment of well-trained security personnel to ensure the safety and protection of students, teachers, and school property.

“Educational institutions must remain secure places where learning can thrive without fear or intimidation. We express our deep concern over the recent incidents involving the abduction of students.

“We sympathise with the affected families and urge them to remain hopeful, steadfast, and prayerful as security agencies and relevant government authorities continue to work tirelessly towards ensuring the safe rescue and return of the abducted children.

“Furthermore, we appeal to members of the public to exercise caution and responsibility in the dissemination of information.

“Recent developments have shown that several old and misleading videos are being circulated on social media, thereby creating unnecessary panic and confusion.

“We encourage all citizens to verify information from credible and reliable sources before sharing it with others.

“At this critical moment, Nigerians must remain united, patriotic, and supportive of efforts aimed at restoring peace and security.”

The group affirmed its commitment to advocating for the welfare, security, and development of young people across the nation.
