AS part of its research efforts, and especially as its contribution to the ongoing battle against the ravaging COVID-19 epidemic, the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, on Tuesday unveiled an automated solar-powered hand sanitiser dispenser, 3-D face shield and face masks (OOU FT-20), anti-COVID syrup, among others – all made on the campus.
The advantage of the automated sanitiser, according to the vice chancellor, Professor Ganiyu Olatunde who made the presentation, is that the user does not need to touch it; they only need to stretch their hand under it. The machine senses the user’s hand and dispenses the sanitiser.
It was produced by a team of the Department of Engineering of the university, led by the dean, Professor Sulaimon Musediq.
The vice chancellor said the university has been talking to some companies to see to the possibility of mass producing the product for wider use.
The 3-D face shield (tagged OOU FT-20) and 3-D nose masks are actually a rarity among personal protective equipment in Nigeria for now. They were produced through a joint effort of the Future of Medicine, Science, Technology and Innovation Group (led by Professor Ahmed Adedeji) and the Triple Helix Research Group of the university (led by Dr Olumuyiwa Ganiyu Yinusa).
The OOU anti-COVID syrup, Professor Olatunde said, has already been sent to the National Agency for Drug Administration and Control for necessary assessment and certification.
Made from local herbal products, the syrup, according to the team leader, Dr Joseph Ashidi, does not just boost immunity against the viral disease, it has also been proven to have the capacity to effectively manage the symptoms of COVID-19 infection.
The vice chancellor expressed strong conviction that the product will successfully scale NAFDAC certification.
Other research products of the university presented include hand sanitiser (OOUTISER) and hand washing liquid produced by the university’s Department of Chemistry.
“Because of our deep involvement in research in phyto-medicine by the Faculty of Pharmacy and other research units within the university, we won a British Council grant of 10,000 pounds some months back; and this gave us the latitude to also bring in local entrepreneurs to join the university in research,” the vice chancellor added.
Professor Olatunde also spoke about some of the things the university had done lately for its host communities to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown, including distribution of palliatives, especially food items.
He appreciated the traditional rulers in the communities for having been so accommodating and kind to the university and its students over the years.
Professor Olatunde also noted that the university had been able to sustain prompt payment of staff salaries, COVID-19 lockdown notwithstanding.
He also noted that since his assumption of office, the university had moved from 76 per cent to 92.7 per cent full accreditation of its programmes.
