•He starved me of food, fought, punched me — Wife

A woman, Rashidat, has dragged her husband, Sarafatu before Grade A Customary Court, sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, praying for the dissolution of their union on the allegation of neglect, constant fight, domestic violence and threat to life.

Rashidat said that the greatest mistake he ever made in life was that of getting married to her husband.

She stated that she knew no peace since the outset of her marriage as a result of her husband’s reckless lifestyle.

Rashidat explained that Sarafatu refused to be committed to his responsibilities in the home, thus neglecting her and their children.

The plaintiff in addition stated that the defendant left them to starve on a regular basis, which made their children always appear malnourished.

Rashidat said she worked round the clock to cover her husband’s laxity in the home.

Rashidat explained that Sarafatu was impatient and always turned every argument into a fight.

According to her, rather than show appreciation for all her efforts, her husband being brutal in nature constantly punch and leave her sore.

Rashidat stated that Sarafatu had made her life miserable enough, and thus decided to end their relationship.

She entreated the court for their children’s custody, and also pleaded that the court made her husband responsible for their welfare.

Rashidat further requested an order restricting her husband from threatening and interfering with her private life.

Sarafatu gave his consent to the dissolution of their marriage.

He accused his wife of infidelity.

Sarafatu explained that he caught her with her lover and reported her to her parents and their children, but that she refused to disengage from the relationship.

The defendant stated that the plaintiff walked out their marriage after she was impregnated by her lover.

Safaratu begged the court for custody of their children.

According to him, his wife is morally bankrupt and would be a bad influence to them.

Rashidat, in her testimony, said, “I regret ever marrying my husband.

“He is irresponsible and nonchalant towards my welfare and that of our children.

“He did not carry out the normal marital rites on my behalf, while he also did not pay my bride price.

“Our marriage was void of bliss from the outset of our relationship.

“My husband was unloving and uncaring.

“He failed to be live up to his responsibility in the home.

“My husband neglected me and our children and starved us on a regular basis.

“Our children always looked frail and malnourished, which was not pleasing to me.

“I worked round the clock in order to meet the responsibility of feeding our home and other needs since my husband was not there.

“My husband lacked patience and often turned every argument into a fight.

“Rather than being appreciative of my efforts, all that I got from him were bruises from the punches I received from him while beating me, which always left me sore.

“Our neighours also got tired of mediating in our differences.

“My lord, my mind is made up on leaving my husband.

“I, therefore, pray this honourable court to dissolve our marriage.

“I also entreat the court for our children’s custody, while my husband is made to be responsible for their upkeep, giving feeding, education and health care a priority.

“I, further request an order restricting my husband fro threatening and interfering with my privacy.”

Sarafatu, responding, said, “My wife is a slot.

“She was dating another man while still married to me.

“I caught her with this man and reported her to her parents who admonished her.

“My wife rather than disengage from the illicit relationship went deeper into it.

“She moved out of my house after she was impregnated by her lover.

“My lord, I agree that our union be dissolved.

“I, plead that our children be put in my care because their mother will influence them negatively.”
