A group, Lagos State Prominent Indigenes, has formally declared that the state’s top political leadership in 2027 should be reserved for indigenous citizens.
In a communique issued after its Technical Committee meeting, the group insisted that the offices of governor, deputy governor, and speaker of the House of Assembly must be occupied by bona fide Lagosians with verifiable ancestral roots.
The communique, signed by the group’s convener, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, is anchored on the quest for equity and the preservation of the state’s unique identity.

According to the group, ensuring that the reins of power remain in the hands of indigenes is vital for deeper stakeholder alignment and the long-term stability of governance in the state.
While advocating a shift in local leadership, the group reaffirmed its support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu.
It stated that any candidate seeking political office must have a clean record of integrity, free from corruption or criminal infractions; a proven track record of achievement in either the public or private sector; the requisite academic and professional qualifications; sound character and discipline; and a demonstrated commitment to family values.
The group also pledged to engage with all qualified aspirants, with the aim of identifying and supporting candidates best suited to steward the collective future of Lagos State.
