There was a festive atmosphere across Lagos’ political and social landscapes a few days ago as Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu celebrated his 61st birthday, drawing an avalanche of goodwill messages from political leaders, captains of industry, traditional rulers and members of the diplomatic and business communities.

The birthday of the Lagos helmsman has become one of the most talked-about events in elite circles, with admirers celebrating a man many describe as one of the state’s most influential leaders in recent times. From the corridors of power to the boardrooms of corporate Nigeria, tributes have continued to pour in, extolling his leadership style, humility and commitment to the development of Africa’s largest commercial city.

Leading the pack of well-wishers are President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, members of the National Assembly, ministers, traditional rulers, party stalwarts and prominent business leaders, all of whom praised Sanwo-Olu for what they describe as his unwavering dedication to public service.

Since assuming office in 2019, the governor has presided over several projects, transportation initiatives, urban renewal programmes and technology-driven reforms that have continued to shape conversations about governance in Lagos.

Beyond politics, Sanwo-Olu has also cultivated cordial relationships with the business community, the entertainment industry and the civil society, making him one of the most visible public office holders on the nation’s social scene.

Though the governor is expected to mark the occasion in a relatively modest manner, friends and associates are said to be organising private gatherings and thanksgiving sessions in his honour, reflecting the esteem in which he is held by those close to him.

For many in Lagos, the celebration is not merely about adding another year but about recognising a leader, whose tenure has been closely watched both within Nigeria and beyond.
