Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has said that the Kano State Government has paid a total of N32 billion out of the N48 billion backlog of gratuities and death benefits owed to retirees and families of deceased civil servants within three years.

The governor made this known at the Government House in Kano during the release of the sixth tranche of N5 billion for the settlement of the entitlements.

Yusuf explained that the latest disbursement brings the total amount paid by his administration since assuming office in May 2023 to N32 billion, representing a significant portion of the inherited liabilities.

“We thank Allah (SWT) for enabling us to continue settling outstanding gratuities and death benefits to our retired civil servants and families of deceased civil servants,” he said.

“In continuation of the payment, today we are releasing the sum of N5 billion as the sixth tranche of gratuities and death benefits.”

He noted that the ongoing payments underscore his administration’s commitment to addressing the long-standing issue of unpaid entitlements affecting retirees and families of deceased workers at both state and local government levels.

The governor assured that efforts were ongoing to clear the remaining balance and permanently resolve the challenge.

He urged beneficiaries to remain patient and continue to support the administration with prayers to sustain the initiative.

Yusuf also commended the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners for their cooperation and understanding.

The event witnessed jubilant scenes as pensioners reportedly received instant bank alerts confirming payment of their benefits.

Dignitaries present included the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, alongside state and national officials of the pensioners’ union.

While speaking at the occasion, Professor Yilwatda commended Gov Yusuf’s administration for the payment of N32 billion out of N48 billion within three years.

He added that this gesture demonstrated by Governor Yusuf shows that he has the interest of workers at heart, by putting a smile on the faces of many people and deserves commendation.
