Ask the Doctor

Is this scabies?

Published by

My son who attends a high brow boarding school recently returned home with complaints of itching which is worse at night. Our doctor diagnosed scabies which he said must have been due to infection from the boarding school. My concern is if this is actually scabies since the school authorities denied that any of the other students had scabies?

It is true that Scabies is usually found in crowded communes such as boarding schools. It can be diagnosed by examining a scraping of your son’s skin to under a microscope. The microscopic examination can determine the presence of mites or their eggs. Once the diagnosis has been made, the school authorities must be informed so that the schools’ beddings could be treated to avoid further spread of the infestation. It is equally important for all students to be treated to avoid a recurrence.
