Former Governor of Sokoto and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has said he will obtain full details of the reported United States airstrikes carried out as part of ongoing counterterrorism cooperation between Nigeria and the US.

Tambuwal made this known in a statement issued on Friday, following reports of an airstrike linked to counterterrorism operations in parts of North-West Nigeria.

He urged Sokoto residents to remain calm and law-abiding while relevant authorities clarify the circumstances surrounding the operation.

“I have noted the reports concerning an airstrike carried out as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts through cooperation between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States.

“I wish to assure the people of Sokoto South that I am in active talks with relevant security authorities to obtain full details and ensure that all necessary safeguards are upheld,” Tambuwal said.

The former governor emphasised that counterterrorism operations are targeted strictly at criminal and terrorist elements, and not innocent civilians.

“It is important to reassure the public that counterterrorism operations are aimed at those who threaten our collective safety, not innocent civilians who are themselves victims of insecurity. The protection of civilian lives remains paramount,” Tambuwal added.

He also commended the efforts of Nigeria’s military and security agencies, noting that their work, often carried out in collaboration with international partners, is critical to restoring peace and stability.

Tambuwal further called on community leaders, traditional institutions and residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information and resisting misinformation capable of heightening fear or tension.

“Through unity, vigilance and support for lawful security efforts, we will overcome the forces of terror and secure lasting peace for Sokoto State and Nigeria at large,” he said.
