Gunmen attacked an advance team working for Governor Alex Otti along the Umuowa–Ihite axis in Imo State.

The Abia Government confirmed this incident on Tuesday.

In a statement from the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ukoha Ukoha, it was clarified that the governor’s convoy was not involved; only his advance team was affected.

Ukoha stated that the three-member advance team was en route to Sam Mbakwe Airport in the early hours of the day when their vehicle came under gunfire along the Umuowa–Ihite axis.

He said that the incident, which occurred shortly before the airport junction, left the officials shaken but unharmed.

He dismissed social media reports suggesting that Otti’s convoy was targeted, saying that the governor was nowhere near the route at the time.

“In the early hours of today, Dec. 2nd, a three-member advance team from the Office of the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, on duty to Sam Mbakwe Airport, Imo State, was attacked by unidentified gunmen.

“The incident occurred between Umuowa and Ihite junction, shortly before the Sam Mbakwe Airport Junction in Imo State.

“The general public is hereby informed that the convoy of Gov. Otti was not involved in this attack, and no life was lost during the unfortunate incident,” he said. (NAN)
