Sokoto State is set to overhaul its historic and cultural landmarks in a bid to stimulate tourism and boost revenue, Governor Ahmad Aliyu announced on Friday.
Speaking at the commissioning of the remodelled Zawiyatu Sheikh Aliyu Bunza, Aliyu said the state’s heritage as the cradle of the Caliphate demands renewed attention to centuries-old monuments and artefacts that have fallen into neglect.
“The revival and improvement of these historical sites will preserve the rich history of the Caliphate and its founders, while providing a conducive environment for tourists, scholars and researchers,” the governor said. He added that the state would seek federal partnerships to ensure the proper development and protection of its heritage sites.

The governor also directed relevant agencies to produce a comprehensive blueprint for the reconstruction and management of heritage locations across the state.
Sites expected to benefit from the revival plan include Hubbaren Shehu, Hubbaren Muhammadu Fodiyo in Degel, Tabkin Kwato, Alkalawa and Surame, among others.
Policy analysts say converting these monuments into attractive tourist destinations through coordinated state, federal collaboration could generate jobs, expand the hospitality sector and increase government revenue.
