The burial of Mama Sabainah Opawole, mother-in-law of former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, turned into an unexpected display of political camaraderie as leading figures from across Ogun State’s political divide gathered in Abeokuta to pay their last respects.

The funeral service, held at the First Baptist Church, Ibara, Abeokuta, drew an impressive congregation of political heavyweights, traditional rulers, business leaders, clergy, and society figures, creating a rare atmosphere where political rivalry gave way to shared humanity.

One of the defining moments of the solemn occasion came when Ladi Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 election, was seen warmly embracing Governor Dapo Abiodun. The gesture drew the attention of many attendees, as the two politicians, who have often found themselves on opposing sides of Ogun’s political landscape, exchanged pleasantries in a cordial and relaxed manner.

Adebutu was also spotted exchanging a handshake with Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi), further fueling conversations among political observers about the significance of the warm interactions. The scenes underscored the reality that, beyond political competition, moments of grief often provide opportunities for unity, mutual respect, and reconciliation.

The funeral attracted an array of distinguished guests from across party lines, with politicians converging to honour the memory of the deceased.

While the occasion was primarily one of remembrance and thanksgiving for a life well lived, it also served as a reminder that compassion and shared values can transcend political differences. The warm exchanges among Ogun’s leading political figures became one of the enduring talking points of the day, leaving many hopeful that the spirit of civility displayed at the funeral would continue beyond the church walls.
