Folarin tasks youths on ICT

Senator Teslim Kolawole Folarin, the lawmaker representing Oyo Central senatorial district at the upper chamber of the National Assembly and Mr Oyeleye Sunday, Provost, Federal Cooperative College, Eleyele, Ibadan have called on artisans, farmers and traders to leverage on ICT to advance their businesses.

The duo said this while presenting certificates to participants at the just concluded Batch B training on ICT skill acquisition on products and wares marketing for co-operators in the city.

At the training, over 200 participants drawn from Lagelu, Egbeda, Akinyele and Ibadan North-East local governments were taken through the rudiments of ICT and how it could be used to promote their businesses and the need for them to use cooperative society as a backup for business and self-reliance.

The training consultant, Zango Corporate Innovation Ltd, said the trained participants were given start-up funds, and all the covid 19 protocols were duly observed during the training.

Senator Folarin, while addressing the participants, tasked Nigerian youths to recognize the role of ICT as a major driver of the world economy and critical to our future as a nation.

He declared that the time had come for the Nigerian youth to leverage digital knowledge and cooperative management techniques to curb the recurring menace of unemployment in Nigeria.

“The world is now a global village, therefore Nigeria youths must recognize the role of Information Communication Technology (ICT) as a major driver of the world economy and critical to our future as a nation.

“To this end, Nigerian youths are enjoined to leverage on digital knowledge and cooperative management techniques to curb the recurring menace of unemployment in Nigeria,” he said.

Senator Folarin added, “You will agree with me that there are no white-collar jobs for millions of Nigerian youths especially the graduates.

“That is why I facilitated two different empowerment training for 1,500 youths to take them away from the unemployment market.”

The Provost Federal Cooperative College, Mr Oyeleye Sunday, in his remarks, corroborated Senator Folarin’s claims on the benefits of ICT in Nigeria and urge the participants to make use of the skills acquired to impact society positively.

Atinuke Akanbi, a trader from Offa in Lagelu local government said the training was a timely intervention because it came at a time when most businesses were done online.

“Through this training, I have learned how to use social media to market my products, reach out to more customers and I believe it will help me,” she said.

Ishola Aminat, another trader from Egbeda said she would use the stipends received from the senator to add to her business and use the knowledge acquired during the training to upgrade her skills.
