Owen Cooper has become the youngest male actor to win a Primetime Emmy Award after being named Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for his role in Netflix’s Adolescence.
The 15-year-old played Jamie Miller, a schoolboy accused of murdering a classmate, in the four-part drama.
In his acceptance speech, Cooper said: “Standing up here is just, wow, it’s just so surreal. When I started these drama classes a couple of years back, I didn’t expect to even be in the United States, never mind here.”
He added: “I think tonight proves if you listen, and you focus and you step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life. Who cares if you get embarrassed? Anything can be possible. I was nothing about three years ago, I’m here now.”
Cooper thanked his family, co-stars and the production team, saying: “It may have my name on this award, but it really belongs to the people behind the camera.”
Adolescence also won best limited series, along with awards for directing, writing and acting prizes for Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty.
Doherty, who played a child psychologist in the series, said she would be “banging on about Owen Cooper and Adolescence for the rest of my life”.
Cooper broke the record previously held by Scott Jacoby, who was 16 when he won in 1973. Roxana Zal remains the youngest acting winner overall, having won at 14 in 1984.
The ceremony also saw The Studio win several comedy awards, The Pitt named best drama series, and Severance collect acting honours, while Stephen Colbert took home best talk series.
