Former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku, has urged Nigerian youths to prioritise hard work, integrity, and self-reliance, warning against what he described as the growing acceptance of corruption and unearned wealth.
He spoke at the 29th anniversary of the Hallmarks of Labour Foundation (HLF) in Lagos, where the foundation also presented its Role Model Awards.
Anyaoku expressed concern over declining societal values, citing the rise in examination malpractice compared to earlier years when, he said, such practices were rare.
“In my own school days, examination malpractice was an unknown phenomenon. But now, even some parents and guardians help their children to cheat,” he said.
He also pointed to what he described as reduced public condemnation of corruption, noting that the sources of wealth are no longer scrutinised as closely as they once were.
“In my young adult working days, corruption wherever it occurred was openly condemned,” he added.
The elder statesman said success remains tied to discipline and ethical conduct.
“Success in every human endeavour is a result of hard work. Integrity is the most important possession of any person,” he said.
He advised young Nigerians to make career choices that promote self-reliance, identifying sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, ICT, and entrepreneurship as viable options.
Anyaoku also cautioned against pursuing politics for personal gain, urging those interested in public office to focus on service.
The event featured the recognition of 13 Nigerians for contributions in various fields, alongside posthumous honours for five Africans.
